An Asana is a body posture. The term is derived from the Sanskrit word for
‘seat’.
Asana, the third limb of yoga in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, refers to the
practice of physical postures that prepare the body for meditation and
cultivate physical strength, mental calm and stability. It also provides us
spiritual benefits. Sage Patanjali defines Asana as “स्थिरसुखमासनम्” (sthirasukham-āsanam), which means asana is that posture which is firm but
relaxed.
Asanas could be standing, sitting, arm-balances, twists, inversions, forward
bends, backbends, or reclining in prone or supine postures.
